Sisters

My Aunt Maisy, 86, traveled up from Virginia to spend a couple of days with her sister Winnie, 92, this weekend. They just sat next to each other for long stretches of time, talking little. But Aunt Maisy touched her sister often, and every time she did, a smile flickered to life in Aunt Winnie's eyes.

  1. Lovely, Angella. I've been away being shellacked by someone I trusted and loved. This photo, and your entire blog give me such hope that the human race is basically good, and full of love. My grandmother and aunt lived to be 101 and 1/2 and 99, and they had a similar reunion/goodbye. It was a joy to watch such tenderness. xo.

  4. That is about the most beautiful example of simplicity and power that I've seen in a while. Thank you for sharing it with us -- the photo, your words, the women --

  5. And the Rosemary Clooney tune playing in the background (although I prefer the Linda Ronstadt/Bette Midler cover of this song). I hope that if I even make it to 92 I still have my sister and brothers around to smile at and with.

  12. For those of us who never saw family members reach these ages, there seems ever greater meaning in the photo and your words. What endures, the strength of ties. Yes, very beautiful. Thank you. xo
