Orange is the new black?

This is me in a cab on my way to an interview for a job I will probably not get. The interview was a lot of fun, though. I sat facing three lawyers who gave me the third degree. I learned a lot from them. I thrilled to the agility of their minds. Some questions absolutely stumped me but I fumbled through and did my best. It most likely was not enough. Onward.

This prospect was not in the field of journalism exactly; it was in a parallel arena, one in which the skills honed as a writer and editor for magazines could be transferred. I have to say it was absolutely refreshing to walk into an office building and be surrounded by "real" people, not X-ray thin women in haute couture and skinny heeled pointy toed suede boots, but people of all descriptions and sizes and hues, many of them wearing comfortable shoes (this is a thing, for me; I can't wear those spiky heels and always feel as if I am being judged for my lack of them). I felt, dare I say it, normal.

My daughter is back to herself, by the way. All is well, mostly because she shifted her perspective. Such magic, that.

  1. Wait. Whoa! Stop!
You have NO wrinkles. Your skin is flawless. Your eyes are like some eternal truth.
Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?
(And by the way- I hope you get the job if you want it. And I'm glad your daughter is doing better. I breathe a sigh of relief with you.)

    1. Ah Mary, it's just the light. Also when I take a selfie with my phone then download it from the cloud onto my computer and then upload it to my blog, the picture loses detail with each step which very nicely blurs my very present wrinkles. Believe me, I have them. But I like this picture because it has the additional subterfuge of the scarf at the neck. Oh yes. The chin. The neck. Lost detail in photos may not work for the purists, but at this stage I'm a fan. Lol.

  2. Absolutely stunning. Must be the ackee and saltfish. Instead of banning it they should eat that instead of using Botox.

  7. Well, I like the look in your eyes in that picture, and if it's lost some detail or intensity through multiple translations, I like it even better. Goes nicely with that great appreciation for learning from hard questions and sharp minds.

  8. Well, you certainly LOOK great, whether you got the job or not. Are you saying that most people in magazines are x-ray thin and wear fashionable shoes? Because that certainly was NOT the case in newspapers. :)

    1. Steve, maybe not in newspapers, but there certainly is a type that inhabits the halls of women's magazines, very stylish women, usually very thin, and yes, heels up to here and shoes to die for. Or on. But of course, we can only be ourselves, and be happy with that, so I'm not trying to be what I'm not. Never works anyway, does it?

  9. setting aside all your disclaimers, you are a great-looking woman and you are working that orange scarf.

i have never been able to were high heels. first, because i was taller than everyone at age 12. second, because i went barefoot for the next 20 years. third, because i lived in NYC in areas where you needed to be able to run, for the next 20 years. now i am try them on in shoe stores, and go home and put on my sheepskin slippers. xo

  10. I'd hire you based on your eyes alone! Your resume and incredible skill and experience would just be a bonus. Did that sound sexist? Oh, well.

I hate job interviews. I always feel so phony and put-on. But if you had a good time at it, that's usually a good sign, right? You were at ease. You seem the sort that's at ease in many if not most situations, though. I envy that. xo

  11. Yes, yes, my goodness, you are stunning. That color is amazing on you, your skin lit up like honey. Perhaps the job will work out, and perhaps it won't, but either way you now have this vision of the setting in which you want to work. The atmosphere. I can't wear high heels either. High heels and I are fundamentally at odds.

  12. Ugh, heels. I despise heels. No judgment on that end whatsoever. I am right there with you. They aren't worth it. No way. You look beautiful, by the way. Good luck with the job! xoxo

  13. Your face looks thinner. I'm seeing some cheek bones there. You look good. high heels, bah humbug.

  14. What an absolutely gorgeous photo!
And I couldn't agree more about the shoes. Cowboy boots are my answer.

  15. You are so pretty. If you want the job, I hope you get the job. That's a great color for you. I have a scarf that color, but it's not nearly as flattering on me as it is you.
