Good things

I kind of love those rain boots in the Cornell University bookstore. After four years of that bookstore supplying my daughter's study needs, she will graduate in just 19 days. A part of me wishes she could be sheltered longer, because those four protected years of schoolwork and life lessons and fun with friends have simply zoomed by, and now the so called real world awaits. It's a sign of emotional health, I suppose, that both my kids seem to have made/be making the transition without too much angst. There's more angst in me if you want to know the truth. But that might be just my habitual response to all new phases of life, mine or my loved ones. Speaking of new phases, my son, who you might know has long dreamed of being a firefighter/EMT, received a date for his intake interview with the FDNY. He still has a few more hoops to pass through, but he was a happy young man as he set off for work this morning on his bike. I notice he's finally wearing a bike helmet, after years of my asking him to do so. I see this as a sign that his frontal lobe executive function is finally coming on line.

  1. Even I, from this distance, cannot believe that your beautiful daughter has been in college for four years. I swear to you. I took a nap and woke up and she was done.

  2. How wonderful! Both your children are on their way with so much confidence!!
I can relate though, to the loss. This year, my daughter had to drop out of our family's overseas travel insurance (rules and regulations) and I cried because this felt like the last tie had been cut. Which of course it isn't at all but still.

  3. I am with Ms. Moon. I can't believe she is graduating college. My daughter is graduating high school in June. I think I will shed a few tears over that.

  4. Your children are wonderful because they have great parents. Each will pass on all the love and confidence instilled in them and you get to watch!

  5. I can't believe your daughter is finished either! And for a present I'd buy her a cute pair of those boots!

  6. Hopefully the helmet wearing is a forerunner to being a firefighter, when he will most certainly have to wear a helmet! I wish him good luck for his first interview.

  7. I can't believe your daughter is graduating already. I remember when she first went off to school! In fact I'm pretty sure I remember when your SON went off to school. It's amazing how time flies, even in blogland. :)

  8. Oh how I empathise with you. I completely understand your "mother's Angst". I've been there. Still dealing with it. I guess it's like my Mother said to me---" You'll always be my child and as long as I live I'll be concerned about you". How lovely is that? !! I guess we simply must have faith and trust in a favourable outcome.
    Take care.

  9. It's both wonderful and heartwrenching to see our children succeed ... and head off on their own paths ... but there are perks, too ...

  11. Oh what happy boots, you should treat yourself and your daughter to a pair. How exciting for her to be entering the real world. Job well done, mom, though of course we are moms forever.
