Abbe and Notta

My daughter is wearing a jean jacket that used to belong to one of her friends in second grade. Another of their friends filched it and has had it for years. Then, this fall, my daughter swapped a sweater of hers with that friend so that she is now the owner of this storied jean jacket from second grade. My niece, meanwhile looks about 12 years old but is holding it down in dental school. She said the intensive masters degree in biomedical sciences that she took last year was "the best forty thousand I will ever have to pay back," because it utterly prepped her for the intensity of dental school. My daughter calls her cousin "my studying guru." I feel such gratitude today for the closeness of the cousins, and the decades of shared history that binds us all.

  1. I love it! Soooo happy to hear that's she's off to a great start in Dental School! Funny--always thought she was taller than your daughter!

    1. Kimberly, no, my niece is tiny. She's older than my daughter by four years but definitely more petite. As her dad (my brother) likes to say, she doesn't take up much space but she defends it fiercely.

  2. So happy to hear about all the chatter going on in your home! Very jealous of the scarves. I can't seem to figure out how to wear those. They do it so elegantly! Hope you all enjoy fall break. Ha Ha :)

    1. Angie, thank you! The chatter is divine. They do have a way with those scarves, don't they?

  3. I don't think I fit my clothes from second grade in second grade! They both look lovely. :-)

    1. Birdie, I wouldn't have fit my second grade clothes then or now, but I think when my girl was in second grade, jean jackets were roomy and now the style is cropped and tight so I guess it works. The elbows are (artfully?) shredded!

    1. Linda, always nice to see you. She isn't tiny, she's normal sized, but maybe the jacket, passed among friends like that, has some magical properties!

  5. Do you too marvel at how pretty your girls are and the glow of youth and possibility they possess? It gives me energy of some sort. Sweet Jo

    1. Dear Sweet Jo, such a lovely comment. I do marvel at how pretty they are, but I think you've glmpsed the source, their youth and sense of possibility, and also their joy. They are so radiant to be around, especially when they are together, and I find I keep trying to capture that radiating light and joy in pictures, and I can never quite get it. I think that's why I take so many pictures of them. They magnify each other's light.

  6. Yeah, how is it that your daughter can fit into a jacket from second grade?? Either she is really small or that jacket must have been HUGE back then!

Glad they're both doing so well. :)

    1. Steve, I think the jacket was fairly oversized back then, and also the girls have gotten taller but not very much wider. Lucky them!

  8. Two beautiful women right there. And it sort of freaks me out that your daughter fits into someone's jean jacket from second grade.
