Flummoxed

The GOP shuts down the government over the Affordable Care Act, which will launch today no matter how much they beat their chests? The House Republicans hold the nation hostage over a health care policy that is the law of the land? I hope Obama stands firm and refuses to blink. One should never negotiate with hostage takers. Especially those who continue to get paid while those they take hostage have their paychecks frozen.

The world is tilted all wrong.

There's still a lot of breath-holding happening over here.

  1. They are bullies and somehow (and I do not think I am being paranoid here) I believe that the Koch brothers are involved.
Yes, may our president stand firm. This cannot be the way things are handled in our country.

    1. Bullies! Ms. Moon, I so agree. My son is at this moment watching Lincoln, the movie, which always reminds me that part of the problem is the way the government is organized. It invites the most adversarial relationships and among those who most need to cooperate. Sigh. Hugs.

  2. All I have to say it this.

    Article 25.

"(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control."

    oh, and this.... Matthew 25:31-46

and I will keep saying it!

  3. Agree with Ms. Moon, Koch bros involvement would not be a surprise, but nothing seems to surprise us any more. Shut down and yet congress is still "on the payrole"...Ahhh the folly at the expense of the country they love ....mmm hmmm - define "love"....$$$$$

    1. Linda Sue, but do they love their country? Or do they hate our president more? It's a sad state of affairs, for sure.

  4. I add my voice to this, too. I am often stubborn to my own detriment (one of my very few faults), so of course I'm over here hoping that the president stands firm until hell freezes over.

  5. They're all a bunch of bullies.
I've been fuming for days anticipating this
and now that the shutdown has happened,
    I'm fuming even more.
    I love your photo!

    1. T, thank you. That wrong way round freon universe seemed the perfect photo to illustrate the absurdity of this shutdown. xo

  6. Fantastic photo, and I agree with everything you've said.

Now, I adore your new look on the blog. How did you get that photo behind the text?

    1. Hi Elizabeth, I got a new computer (had to give the work one back) so maybe my blog looks different now, but I haven't made any changes to its look in a while. If you're talking about the photo of the colorful pillows, I simply went into Templates, chose Customize, and played around with the options. This is one of the photos they offer, not mine, but I love the colors and the sense of comfort implied by the cushions. Truly, this place cushions me. You are such a big part of that, so thank you, and love.

  7. Listening to some of them justify why they are doing this is incredible. Yes, they may have won their own districts by "landslides" but the rest of the country voted Obama and his healthcare reforms in - twice. It's laughable that they are claiming to be the voice of the people - obviously not the majority who voted in the last two elections.

    1. Expat mom, part of the problem is the extreme gerrymandering of the political map, the maze like lines drawn to ensure that mostly those who will vote for them live in their districts. Which means we will not soon be rid of them unfortunately. Nice to see you!

  8. Flummoxed? You are far too polite, and I agree with you and other commenters. The words I would use are not common in "polite conversation" so I will leave them to your wonderful imagination...

  9. It's amazing they CAN do this. Something's wrong with our system when a minority of lawmakers can hold a majority hostage over a settled issue of public policy. (As opposed to a minority rights issue, in which the minority's rights are to be respected over the majority opinion.)

    1. Steve, I think the system is deeply flawed, and it will show even deeper fissures as time goes on. I'm not at all clear what can be done about it, though.
