Slipping into night

"Elections from North Dakota to Georgia may be stolen. The idiot king spews forth bigotry. The opposition party is threatened with attempted assassinations. A completely unfit attempted racist has been placed on the Supreme Court to judge the idiot king's obvious corruption. What little democracy this country ever had may well be entering its twilight. I hope I am wrong, but as night falls and the political winds get chilly, I am remembering Thomas Paine's admonition that we not be 'sunshine patriots' but winter soldiers. It is looking more and more like our charge is not to win a short term battle, but to settle in for a long campaign in a war that may well continue after our lives have ended. I am hoping against hope for a new dawn, but I think it's time to prepare for a long winter of discontent." —Jason Tebbe, historian

  1. I keep wondering how I could move my entire family to another country. This is getting so terrifyingly serious.

  2. It’s not looking good. I’m on the road in PA trying to get the votes. Good news is it’s possible my Republican Congressman may be unseated, something not a likelihood a few months ago. My other home state is all blue like yours,

Ms Moon, Florida desperately needs you and your family. I’m hoping they all come out to vote. A possibility for change there. Get out that vote!!!

  3. There are variations to the theme happening seemingly everywhere. And even if we can turn the tide at the next elections - in whatever country - the seed of populism, of fascist thinking has been planted. We need to do more than vote and return to business as usual.

  4. the average lifespan of an empire is 250 - 300 years and we are definitely in our decline , our Age of Decadence. we've held wealth and power for too long and have abused it.

  5. Yes, we are winter soldiers, and even though I am already weary the fight must go on. I already suspect that this battle will go on long after I'm gone. I look at the innocent faces of young ones on their way to school in the morning. What political, social, earthly landscape will they inherit, I wonder and grieve.

  6. It's horrific and yes, I believe that hate has been unleashed by an amoral, narcissist.
