Quiet Monday

My mother lives at the top of those stairs, down the long hallway. She looks out at the hills, at blue sky and scudding clouds, the Game Show Network with its bells and buzzers and cheers and canned applause playing softly in the background. Yesterday was the final day of carnival in Jamaica. In Kingston, road marchers in masquerade costume and street clothes danced their way from the national stadium to Half Way Tree. My brother and cousins and nieces were there, but I stayed home with my mom. We followed their progress through photos on Instagram. This was how it looked when they were starting out. Two realities. They almost touch.

  1. Carnival may be fantastic, I have no idea, but the serenity of the house where your mother lives calls to me with such peace.

  3. Oh what fabulous photos! Your extended family are stunning! Isn't it nice that you and your mother can follow on Instagram, that is cool. The chartreuse color on the walls is one of my faves, we have that all throughout our house.

  4. There is, apparently, not a single person in your family that is not over-the-top gorgeous! That being said, I am not one for a carnival like atmosphere and would have preferred sitting with you and your mother in that peaceful house.

  6. I myself have strong reclusive tendencies, but let me just say... I woulda been all up and through that Carnival! And if I had the body for it, I'd be out there shaking my tail feathers with the rest of them. Your family is beautiful!

Oh to be in Jamaica for the carnival. One day I will.

  9. I come from a bunch of stoic Nordic people whose idea of a good time is pickled fish and nostalgia, so I have especially adored following Carnival through your instagram. And I have been just stunned, knocked out, breathless, by the beauty of your family. All of you.
