Golden

I love the golden light from that tree outside my son's bedroom window in the week after Thanksgiving. In another few days, every leaf will have fallen from that tree but today, it is glowing. It is like this every year: When everyone leaves after the weeklong festivities, I suddenly notice this tree, spilling its radiant color into the newly quiet air. It is always so peaceful in that room when the tree looks like that, a whisper of nature gentling me.
________

While my cousins were here for Thanksgiving week, we recreated a photo we took 35 years ago, in my storied railroad apartment on West 120th Street. There's absolutely no need to clarify which is the older photo and which the new. We are as close today as we were when the original photo was taken, and that is one of my life's great gifts. These women are my heart sisters.

  1. I took a picture of a golden tree today from my walk. Truly glorious.
And dare I say this? You and your heart sisters have grown only more beautiful (glorious) in the thirty-five years since the original photo.

  2. Your golden tree is picture perfect and to know it reliably returns each year is very comforting. You are very lucky to have heart sisters. Relationships that surpass the test of time are truly remarkable. The best gift ever! Susan

  3. So beautiful! Did you ever have the children's book called "The Cookie Tree?" That tree reminds me of it. When I lived on the east coast, in whatever town I called home, during the fall I'd obsess and wait for one particular tree to "bloom" in the fall with brilliant color. It catches you by surprise every year, right?

  5. ...whoops the comment got published before I finished! My siblings and I have recreated a photo twice that was first taken in 1975. It's been almost a decade since we've done that, and your photo makes me want to one more time. Thank you for that.

  6. Your yellow tree reminds me of a red tree our neighbour used to have. It made our whole family room glow in the fall. When they cut it down I really missed it.

What a wonderful thing to do, to keep re-creating that photo. And I agree with Ms. Moon - you ladies are even more beautiful now. Youth is good; character is even better.

  7. That tree reminds me of one I had outside my window on East 29th Street -- it was a different kind of tree but it was always such a presence in my New York life. And I LOVE the photo recreation!

  8. Your pictures are always so evocative. The tree, the bike (I would kill for that!) that special kind of Autumn sunlight, just wonderful.
There's a ripened beauty in that picture of the 4 of you. Women who have found themselves only become prettier and sweeter.
