Selfie couture

On her day off yesterday, she sent me this selfie from the dressing room of a thrift store in Chicago. She was vey taken with that jacket she found for only $18. She hadn't yet picked up her first paycheck, so she was torn as to whether to go for it. She finally did buy it, and proceeded to wear it to dinner that night with a new friend, a woman her age who just started working at the company where she's interning.

She says she's on her feet morning till night as happens in the food and beverage field, and she wondered if she should have stayed in New York and done the more glamorous sounding restaurant group internship she had been offered. And then she said, "Who am I kidding, the work would have been the same, and I wouldn't have had the experience of living in my own rather nice apartment and discovering a whole new city. I'm finding I really enjoy being on my own." You're not lonely?" I asked her. "Not at all," she said.

  3. This is such an exciting time in her life, and how great to be able to be on your own while having the safety of your supportive parents nearby. And she is beautiful!

    1. Miss A, I remember being that age, with everything before me. I think she seizes it with her whole heart. Nice to see you! xo

    1. Andrea, she does, mostly. There have been some real fashion dont's in her life, but not lately. Sometimes she cares, sometimes she doesn't. When she was your daughter's age, she only cared how the material of her clothes felt, how soft it was; she didn't give a hoot about matching things. We still laugh about it.

  5. Amazing! How do you think it happens that some are so at ease spreading their wings, and others have such difficulty?

    1. Sylvia, I wonder this often! What makes some of us so resilient and some of us so fragile? Do you think it is innate or learned? I have no idea; I'm just glad my girl isn't afraid of pushing out of her comfort zone. Always nice to see you here!

  6. She is a fearless one! I didn't have the guts to do such a thing when I was her age. There are some great items found in thrift stores :)

    1. Angie, I agree about the thrift stores! I found my all time favorite pair of boots, a red cowboy number, in a thrift store for $6 when I was in my twenties. I wore those things till they fell apart.

    1. Steve, I understand Chicago is a very cool town, very hip and urban in its way but more manageable than New York. My daughter says its much cleaner and cheaper than New York, at least in the part of town where she is.

  9. She's a cutie, and the jacket is adorable.

How lucky she is to be having this experience, kind of a temporary advance peek at what life on her own after college will be like. Of course she's not lonely, she's making new friends :)

    1. ellen, the funny thing is, my daughter is my more introverted child yet she looks forward to living on her own but my son, the extrovert, wants company all the time, even if those roommates are his parents. I guess on some level it makes sense. love to you, friend.

  10. I had the desire to do these things at her age, but like Angie June said, I didn't have the guts! Hooray for your girl! The new jacket is THE coolest.

    1. Vesuvius, somehow she just goes for it! She's an odd combination of shy and bold. She ruminates, yet she's also willing to act, to "sling shot it" as she says. And her eyes sparkle and her laugh is so darn engaging that I think she's learned that life will be receptive to her. At least I hope so. Not to say she doesn't agonize sometimes, and occasionally people really push her buttons. But even then, she's bold about facing it. She went and got herself a therapist at the end of last semester so she could stop pushing down the things that make her anxious, she said. Kudos to her. And you, sweet friend, are bolder than you give yourself credit for. You're femDean after all! xo

  11. I've learned to not take comments like that too personally. They can not be lonely, but still miss their mother.

    1. Thanks Lisa. But her comment actually thrills me rather than stings. I love her can do spirit. I know she misses her mom, but she also knows I'm right here, and would jump on a plane at a moment's notice to get to her. So great to see you.
