Missing this place

Every summer when they were growing up, my kids and their cousins spent a month in St. Lucia with their grandma, my mom, at her house in Rodney Bay. That's her beach at dusk. My children came of age on this beach, and next month, they and their significant others will travel to spend a few days there, and to partake of the restaurants and karaoke houses and beach bars, on the strip they once were too young to explore. It's all steps away from my mom's house, I guess our house now, which has just been vacated by our lovely long term tenant. My brother and I are considering doing vacation rentals through sites like Airbnb for a while, encouraged by our kids, who want to be able to take their friends there. The house could not be better situated for sea lovers and foodies and shoppers and beachy night life. When the kids heard the house was going to be unoccupied again, they immediately began making plans. I hope they have a wonderful time, and if ghosts do whisper to them there (as they do to me), I hope the fact that the memories made in this place were such happy ones, will make them smile.

  1. I have a feeling they will even be smiling in their sleep.

    1. Mary, I hope so. It looks and feels very different with my mom not there, but of course the memories are soaked into the very walls.

  3. What a simply beautiful spot. Like Sabine, I could miss this place without ever having been there. It sounds like you could have whatever you preferred - calm and peaceful, or busy and exciting. Hope your kids and their SOs have a great time.

    1. Thanks Jenny_o. My kids and their SOs. Is that a term of art now? I never know what to call their sweethearts—boyfriend and girlfriend sound so middle school. But I like SOs.

    2. I think SO (significant other) is a real thing, like MIL (mother in law) or DH (dear husband) or maybe IWOM (international woman of mystery)! ... They're all driven by technology and itsy-bitsy screens and being too busy to type the whole thing out :)

  4. I love the beauty of this place you've shown us. Your mom is within its fabric. If you can, keep it. An arb&b is a great idea and extra income! Houses are going for $6200 here! I love you beautiful

    1. Joanne, the market for vacation rentals is pretty saturated where the house is, so I'm not sure if our experiment will work, but here's hoping! What a lovely comment that my mom "is within its fabric." I miss her when I go there, but yes, her spirits everywhere. Thank you.

  6. How wonderful to be able to keep it -- I hope you can in perpetuity for grandkids as well!

    1. Elizabeth, my brother and I both think it would be folly to sell it, it's so excellently located, but of course, there are expenses, so if the vacation rentals don't cover them we will have to find another long term tenant, which our kids argue defeats the purpose of having a house in such a place. Catch 22. I wish we were rich!
