Getting Hitched

Today is the day that New York's marriage equality act goes into effect. I am so proud of my state. These lovely women were the first same-gender couple to exchange vows at the Manhattan City Clerk's office this morning. Here, Phyllis Siegel, 76, kisses and then later embraces her wife Connie Kopelov, 84. The love and sense of moment in their faces bring me to my knees.

  10. This was also the couple which most moved me when I looked through a series of photos from these weddings earlier today.

  11. When I first saw this I sobbed. Think what would have happened otherwise. If one of them got ill the other would not be considered family. It is heartbreaking and wonderful. New York New York a hell of a town.

  13. And in California we dither on...while people do fall ill or worse. New York rocks, simple as that. Makes me cry, too, so grateful for some good news. How dare we legislate love? xo

  14. Great photos! They brought tears to my eyes! Thank goodness New York has finally rounded the bend on this issue...and the nation will follow, though it may take a while. Of that I'm sure.

  15. The thing that got to me most about this couple, apart from the obvious depth of their love, was that one of the women is in a wheelchair, and so she has probably already faced health challenges in which her life's true love was not considered family. now she will be. and that made me cry with relief.
