Back in the day

After our external hard drive crashed, obliterating years of photos that we had stored there, my husband went looking in closets and drawers and forgotten corners for hard copies of some of the photos we lost. He has begun painstakingly converting slides and negatives to digital images, an undertaking that is full of unexpected adventure as we relive moments from our shared history. Here is a random sampling of some of the photos recently unearthed. The first was taken on our honeymoon in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Most of the rest were taken in Antigua. The last, of course, was snapped in our very own kitchen in New York.

Our daughter said, Daddy, you look happy. He said, I am.

We found her feeding Nana's dog bites of a chocolate chip cookie.

He loved to run even then, and he was fast, too. So was his cousin.

  1. I love love love these. I am so glad you are putting them all together someplace safe. My photos are in a can in a drawer in the kitchen NOT a safe place. One of these days I need to get them in a photo album. Your family is so beautiful. You inspire me.

    1. rebecca, it feels as if there is no truly safe place. i think maybe we need to store treasured images in multiple places, because technology so quickly becomes obsolete. the fact that you know where the hard copies of your photos are is as safe as it gets.xo

  2. i swear. it's rare you get to see so many beautiful, beautiful people all in the same place at the same time.

even the crash of an external hard-drive can have a silver lining!

  3. So sorry for the crash of the computer and all your photos! I know how time consuming scanning photos takes as I have a world of photos to do. As I read my blog friends posts I am doing home movies and putting them into files. Later I can make my own DVD's but right now I am worried the DVR tapes could degrade or break.

Isn't it a treasure to find and look at old photos?

  5. I love the way the dog sits there patiently waiting. His name was Caesar and he had a happy growl whenever he greeted you.

  7. Surely there was some way of recovering them from your hard drive; that's very sad.

    1. Cro, we tried the geek squad. but the cost to just authorize taking the thing into the "clean room" was exhorbitant! we decided to pay college tuition instead! Now we have the hard drive stored away, waiting for the right solution to present itself. i have faith it will.

  8. aw...thank you so much for sharing these treasures!

Your hard drive will get fixed. When you get a chance search around for indie tech folks who do it...way cheaper and more efficient than Geek Squad. We've forked over something like 500.00 before when our computer crashed about five years ago. Now we have 3 external hard drives; all with the same data on them just in case.

The first photo especially, Angella, is wonderful! You should get it blown up on canvas. LOVE the swimsuit you're wearing in it!
