15 days later

My cousin texted me this morning—this is the cousin who woke up with a fever and headache and sore throat and, worried she had covid, did the responsible thing and got herself tested. That was more than two weeks ago. She felt better two days later but still didn't know her results. Her text:

"Day 15 breaking news: I am negative for Covid. The doctor I spoke with said they have a rapid test that can give results in 15 mins but you have to pay $80 no insurance coverage. But accuracy is only 70 percent. They have people who test positive on nasal swabs but the rapid test says they are negative. Isn’t the rapid test what the President does??"

  1. The accuracy of all the tests is a bit iffy. I Don’t know what to think.

  2. I'm so glad your cousin tested negative. Yay! I don't know how the President gets tested, but I did read that he gets tested several times a day. So, I'm guessing it's rapid.

  3. I'm glad your friend is negative. I have no idea about those tests. My goal is to not need a test! Good luck on the deadlines -- sounds like it's crunch time, but you'll be fine. You're a pro. :)

  4. oh yeah, I remember 'crunch' time as Steve calls it. bearing down to get a job finished on time. I don't know what to think about the tests either, there is so much conflicting info out there.

  5. Good to hear that your cousin's symptoms resolved and that, whether it was accurate or not, she tested negative. After a routine dental visit, I considered getting in line to get tested for free at the low-income clinic where I get my medical and dental care but realized that I truly didn't have enough time yesterday. Someday soon I plan to arrive early, when it is still cool outside, so that the wait in the line isn't too long. The clinic where I get my medical and dental care was created in connection with United Farmworkers and has expanded to include all low-income people. I trust this clinic to be using the optimal test available at this time.

I'm curious about the black and white image of Guadalupe who appears to have been in prison and is accompanied by some symbols I can identify and some that I cannot. She appears to me to have bandages on her face, a sign of having been battered. Most puzzling is the cross with the outline of what looks to me like a female Jesus with a dollar sign at the top of the cross and a bundle of arrows at the bottom of the cross. I thought that I would be able to find out something about that cross with some googling but found nothing. I also searched, with no success, for the circle containing a pattern in red, white and blue, with something like letters in red. I'm wondering where the image came from.

Thank you for the reading list. You are in my thoughts as you work on the second draft while continuing to edit stories for the magazine. Sending love.

  6. The inaccuracy of testing worries me. And it's not just one brand of test, apparently - all of them have problems.
